ROKS Cheonan Visit

U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I Commander Col. Hank Dodge led his staff on a visit to a South Korean Navy base near Pyeongtaek Aug. 5 to learn about the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan (PCC-772), which occurred March 26, 2010, while the U.S. and South Korean Navies were engaged in joint anti-submarine warfare exercises as part of the annual Key Resolve/Foal Eagle military exercise. The explosion near the stern of the ship at 9:22 p.m. caused the ship to break in half. Forty-six of the 104 Sailors aboard the Cheonan perished. A South Korea-led international group of military and civilian authorities determined the Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo fired from a midget submarine. The ROKS Cheonan is a Pohang class corvette – a small maneuverable, lightly armed warship used by the South Korean Navy for coastal defense.
